The Rainbow portrait
Symbolism:
Cloak is decorated with eyes and ears- She hears and sees all.
Pearls- Virginity.
Crown- Royalty.
Above her crown there is a crescent-shaped jewel- Alludes to Cynthia, goddess of the moon.
Serpent wrapped around her left arm- wisdom.
Ruby- Queen's heart ( the queen's passion's are controlled by her wisdom.
Rainbow- Peace. Elizabeth's right hand holds a rainbow with the Latin inscription 'Non sine sole iris' ('No rainbow without the sun').
Henry Frederick (1594–1612), Prince of Wales, with Sir John Harington (1592–1614) in the Hunting Field, 1603
I really like both of these portraits because of the colours used within them. There are wide range of colours used which makes these portraits very appealing and eye catching to look at. Although for the second portrait 'in the hunting field' i couldn't find any symbolism when doing research, the 'Rainbow portrait' has a lot of symbolism within it as well as incorporating a lot of colour.
Within the rainbow portrait i like the way Elizabeth's hair is a gorgeous red colour which is what all women wished to have in that era and that colour is reflected in her attire as well. The meaning of the colour Orange in Elizabethan times was very important as it meant that you were dictated by English Law. In this portrait Elizabeth was in her late sixties however the artist made her look a lot younger by the way he painted it which made Elizabeth look 'ageless' and a lot of people admired this about her.
The colours within both of these portraits were colours only worn by people in high positions in society and were colours deemed to be expensive and precious.
