Through portraits painted at the time of Elizabethan women, we can see the similarities that they were all trying to achieve through their makeup.
A lot of photographers and designers have been influenced by the Elizabethan beauty and this is reflected in their work, however a contemporary twist has been put on it to modernise it for this era.
Similarities:
- Pale complexion, some more white than others. Ceruse which consisted of white lead was used to create this pale complexion, however it was highly poisonous to the women.
- Faint eyebrows or no eyebrows.
- Rouge on the cheeks and on the lips, again some more vivid than others.
- Bright eyes, some used kohl in their waterline as liner to emphasise the whiteness of their eyes.
- A high hair line to increase the size of their forehead.
A lot of photographers and designers have been influenced by the Elizabethan beauty and this is reflected in their work, however a contemporary twist has been put on it to modernise it for this era.
Similarities:
- Pale complexions, apart from the picture of tyra banks where they have actually used her natural skin tone.
- Rouge lips and cheeks.
- Bright eyes.
- Light eyebrows to almost make them look non existent.
- Eye makeup. Whether they have tried to stick to the colour theme and used rouge on the eyes aswell, they have tried to define the eyes by putting some depth into it. Some have even added pearls which was a symbol of wealth in elizabethan times, they would have put pearls in the hair however in the modernised image it has been added to the eyes.
- Peacher tones than true rouge on the cheeks especially.
- The overall look is a lot softer and more blended than the orginial. The original tended to be very sharp and bold, whereas this style has softened the look a lot to make it less harsh.
- Different skin tones. Tyra Banks is mixed race and instead of lightening her skin they have kept her natural skin tone.
