Kat (Katherine) Ashley. 1490-1565

  • Governess to Elizabeth I and was a close friend in later life, known to the queen as 'Kat'.
Kat was always by Elizabeth's side ever since she was a little girl. She taught her a lot in her childhood;
  • Astronomy
  • Geography
  • History
  • Mathematics
  • French
  • Flemish ( Belgium - dutch)
  • Italian
  • Spanish
  • Needlework
  • Embroidery
  • Dancing
  • Riding
  • Deportment (way a person stands / walks)
1545- Kat married Sir John Ashley ( Princess Elizabeth's senior gentleman attendant). Sir John Ashley was a cousin of Elizabeth's mother Anne Boleyn.

Kat's Arrest
Catherine Parr (married to Henry VIII) gave Elizabeth a more stable family life and  brought Elizabeth to court.
When Henry died his son Edward VI was in line to take his position, however Edward's uncles Edward & Thomas Seymour tried to get control.
Thomas investigated whether he could marry Lady Mary or Elizabeth (he was refused). Seymour then moved on to Catherine Parr who shortly agreed.
Seymour began flirtation with 14 year old Elizabeth, Kat Ashley thought this was amusing at first. He entered Elizabeth's bedroom in his nightshirt and tried to tickle her while she was still in bed. Kat became concerned and advised Catherine Parr, who was later accused of taking part in holding down the lady Elizabeth while Seymour slashed her gown into pieces.
1549 (January) - Kat was arrested and taken to the tower for possible involvement in Seymour's activities. She told her story and was found to have done nothing treasonous and was released 13 days before Seymour's execution.

By August Kat returned and stayed with Elizabeth until Elizabeth was imprisoned in the tower by Mary I in 1554.
Kat was then put in prison for 3 months following the discovery of seditious books, after her release she was forbidden to see Elizabeth again.
When Mary I died in 1558 the order was revoked meaning that Kat could see Elizabeth again and she was made her 'First lady of the bedchamber'.

From the research that i have done of Kat these are the ideas that i got.
She was;
  • Innocent - Was found to not have done anything with the involvement of Elizabeth and Seymour.
  • Loyal- She has grown up with Elizabeth and taught her so much, even after the order from Mary I after she died she went straight back to Elizabeth and was by her side until Kat passed.
  • Mysterious- She was arrested for the discovery of seditious books.
  • Royal links- She was incredibly close to Elizabeth who was Queen for a very long time, therefore Kat was surrounded by royalty for a very long time.
